Chris Pine rolls dice on dicey role in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves trailer

“Here’s the thing,” star Chris Pine narrates in the opening moments in the trailer for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. He needn’t continue his sentence: saying “here’s the thing” is already a perfectly succinct summary of this movie’s apparent thing.

In contrast to fellow upcoming high fantasy projects like House of the Dragon and Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, this latest attempt at a D&D movie seems to be doing less sweeping dramatic adventure and more Marvel-style quippy action. This plays more like Wizards of the Coast’s Guardians of the Galaxy, a classic rock soundtrack roaring as we meet a ragtag group that sees a badass fightin’ lady, a blade-wielding stoic guy, and the nature-based one following a music-loving Chris in a barely-costumey leather jacket.

Like so many lesser D&D video game cutscenes, these characters and their banter seems largely insufferable. But given that this is a franchise expressly about geeks doing improv in between battles, it’s actually pretty on-point. And with such monsters on display as an acid-breathing black dragon, a gelatinous cube, a mimic, and an owlbear, at least this is playing the hits beyond, inexplicably, “Whole Lotta Love.”

Watch Hugh Grant follow Jeremy Irons in being too good for a Dungeons & Dragons movie when Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves journeys forth next March.
