The Coen Brothers’ Ballad of Buster Scruggs is now a film bound for awards season

Once planned an anthology miniseries that could combine television and theatrical releases, the Joel and Ethan Coens’ The Ballad of Buster Scruggs has now been whittled down to just the film component. The movie will, however, reportedly maintain the episodic nature of the series, the Coens explaining in a statement that this is their attempt to pay tribute to Italy’s anthology films of the ’60s (not Movie 43?). The Western stars Tim Blake Nelson in the title role, and it’s said Zoe Kazan, Liam Neeson, and Tom Waits also have parts.

The Coens’ first digitally-shot effort, Scruggs is already set to premiere in next month’s Venice Film Festival before hitting theaters in the fall.
