Good news, Drama Kids: it looks like musicals are cool again. Following the success of La La Land, now another indie writer-director is doing an unexpected musical, Variety reporting that It Comes at Night‘s Trey Edward Shults will next month start production on his own modern musical for A24, Waves. Emmy winner Sterling K. Brown and Manchester by the Sea Oscar nominee Lucas Hedges are already set to star, and The Social Network Oscar-winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are attached to compose original music. It’s said the film “follows two young couples as they navigate the emotional minefield of growing up and falling in love” and “will be almost entirely synchronized to music, mixing some iconic contemporary songs alongside an original score.” Given that Brown is 42, several actors have yet to be cast.
