Dakota Johnson deals with Tracee Ellis Ross’s diva in The High Note trailer

Quickly carving out her niche in light comedies, Late Night director Nisha Ganatra is back with another tale of a powerful middle-aged woman struggling to maintain relevance, and the younger underling who just might have what it takes to freshen her image.

Dakota Johnson stars as personal assistant to Tracee Ellis Ross’s Diana Ross, Grace Davis, a diva past her prime and now just playing the old hits at her concerts. Her agent (Ice Cube) wants her to just get the big payday of a Vegas residency, but she wants to make a comeback with her first album in a decade. Also, Johnson’s Maggie quietly has ambitions to become a music producer, so you can see where this is heading. (Straight to the top! Because Grace will get a number one hit produced by Maggie.)

The High Note hits theaters May 8.
