The cost of re-creating 20-something Will Smith has proven too much for the star power of current-day Will Smith.
According to THR, Gemini Man is set to become one of if not the biggest box office messes of the year, facing losses of over $75 million. Ang Lee’s experiment in creating the most stupidly on-the-nose man versus himself conflict reportedly cost $140 million to produce before another $100+ million on the marketing involved in having Will Smith stare at another Will Smith in every subway station and bus stop.
The would-be blockbuster ended up opening domestically in third place, taking in barely $20 million before plummeting in subsequent weeks. Skydance Media, Paramount, and their Chinese co-producers apparently hoped China’s box office would make up for the lackluster U.S. performance, but that didn’t happen. The film likewise opened just above $20 million there, coming in behind Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.
So what does this mean to us? Well, that Gemini Men: Now There’s Also a 30-something and 40-something Will Smith in the Mix is looking sadly unlikely.
Son of a bitch.
