Modernized Easy Rider remake to take a shotgun to satire

Easy Rider, Dennis Hopper’s seminal 1969 counterculture classic that was iconic for its generation and a vanguard for the filmmaking to come in the ‘70s, is getting a contemporary remake. WHY WOULDN’T IT???

According to Variety, a group tellingly identified as “a consortium of stakeholders and producers” have put into development a contemporary retelling of a film that is explicitly about its very specific zeitgeist in American history. It’s said this consortium is still in search of “bold” writers and directors willing to take this long ride that can’t end up well. The relationship between Creed and Rocky has been cited as an example of what they’re going for. Because how would a classic sports underdog story be any different than a film that’s making very pointed commentary on its then-current cultural conflict? They’re both old, respected movies, so what’s the diff?

“Our goal is to build upon the counterculture and freedom narrative the original left us with, and give the youth of today a film that pays serious attention to their own countercultures and challenges,” one producer told the trade. So, ready for a couple travel influencers on Revels to take a cross-country trip through town after town of opioid addiction before getting blasted off their scooters by some guys in a Trump flag-waving, jacked-up pickup who think they look too “woke”?

Maybe that’s something after all…
