As Spider-Man: No Way Home revealed, Marvel’s big-screen multiverse is not so much about showing strange, new dimensions and crazy new takes on characters as it is a mechanic to get the old actor doing the old part again. And judging by this new trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, that remains the case for even the maddest of multiverses.
Given that Marve parent studio Disney bought out Fox—and hastened by the fact Inhumans was an abject failure by any measure—everyone’s been figuring the evergreen X-Men would soon be joining the MCU. But who’d have guessed they’d quite literally be wheeled in with an encore performance from Patrick Stewart?
Yes, if you missed it in the trailer, that’s Stewart seemingly back as Professor Xavier at the 1:18 mark. The fans can’t wait to see him back in his iconic costume of a nice suit and a chair. Nothing may remain in the past. It must all be dragged into the present, be it with CGI or by simply making a man born in 1940 do one of a couple roles he performed decades ago.
Perhaps the Professor will teach the Doctor that he shouldn’t even be bothering with the American accent when Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters May 6.
