Nicolas Cage’s enormous tax burden and financial debts are finally making it to the screen as more than just him doing another straight-to-video action-thriller to pay those off. Have a look with the red-band trailer for The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.
Cage stars as a fictionalized version of himself that owes $600k for his extended stay at West Hollywood’s Sunset Tower Hotel. You wouldn’t think that would be such a big deal for a guy who’s made almost 50 movies in the last decade alone, but again, this is a fictionalized Cage—so he takes a million-dollar payout to attend the party of drug lord Pedro Pascal. CIA operative Tiffany Haddish then recruits Cage to work for her, leading the star into his first “real-life” action movie. Ghosts of Ghost Riders Past and Future also apparently make appearances as younger and elderly Cages.
Anyway, this comes from Tom Gormican, the writer-director whose only prior film is the dismally-received frat-bros-become-frat-men rom-com That Awkward Moment. Cage himself has said he refuses to watch the film because of the falsely “neurotic, high-strung, anxiety-ridden” performance the director made him give as “himself.” But if you want to check it out, it hits theaters April 22.
