Step Brothers is, unequivocally, one of the best comedies of this century (right alongside another SNL‘er-led movie). But can a re-teaming of that film’s stars recreate the original magic as a Sherlock Holmes spoof? Judging by this first Holmes & Watson trailer: yeah, probably not.
Etan Cohen’s writing-directing follow-up to Get Hard, Step Brothers director Adam McKay is only producer here, and it shows in this broad preview, where the only solid gag is the image of Reilly shooting guns at bees. But with Ralph Fiennes playing Moriarty, and the rest of the cast stacked with comedy ringers like Hugh Laurie, Steve Coogan, and Lauren Lapkus, it’s hard not to be hopeful there’s a better comedy afoot, hidden behind this incredibly poor selfie joke. We’ll find out when Holmes & Watson hits theaters November 9.
