Ocean’s 8 and Hereditary had a big weekend at the box office

Well, Oceans 8 may have been the least remarkable Ocean’s entry as a film, but it’s managed to be a series high-water mark at the box office. Over the weekend, the heist spin-off opened at number one, earning a franchise-high $41.5 million (the prior trilogy each opened in the high thirties). That dropped the quickly-waning Solo ($15.2 million) to second and Deadpool 2 to third ($13.6 million)—but at fourth was a bit of a surprise. Outperforming earlier tracking, Hereditary took that spot with just over $13 million, setting a new opening record for “it” indie distributor A24. Avengers: Infinity War rounded out the top five with enough to push the film over the $650 million mark domestically.

Next week: we see how the long-anticipated Incredibles 2 fares against Tag, which is also a movie. See you here!
