Parasite takes a thrilling, historic, wonderfully-unlike-the-Oscars victory

키스 … 키스 !!!

After giving Green Book Best Picture last year—this following decades of similarly poor decisions, without even getting into Crash—the Academy finally made good this year.

Parasite, a favorite among critics (it was certainly one of our favorites of the year), somehow managed to overcome the stigma of being a foreign-language film and actually really good to land the top prize at last night’s Oscars. The thriller-satire also took most of the top non-acting prizes of the awards, bringing home to South Korea wins for Best Original Screenplay, Best International Film, and Best Director. That director, Bong Joon-ho, kept saying how drunk he was going to get that night from even the lesser wins, and it seemed like all the other big-name directors who were his competition were genuinely happy for him, so it was a surprising win that was just as surprisingly a lovely experience from this typically unbearable show.

For once: Well done, Academy! It’s going to be boring as hell when you end up giving Spielberg everything for his West Side Story remake next year, but for now… well done.

Marked with stars, here are the rest of last night’s winners.
