Playmobil: The Movie looks about as good as a Playmobil movie sounds

First announced the same year The Lego Movie hit theaters, Playmobil: The Movie was always destined to follow in its namesake’s footsteps as being infinitely less exciting than Lego. Now, here’s a trailer to firmly assert as much, assuring its apt position as what Mom buys instead of the far better but similar thing you wanted.

Anya Taylor-Joy stars as a girl on a quest to save her brother (Gabriel Bateman) when he’s somehow sucked into the largely forgotten world of Playmobil. The first scene of the trailer would suggest that the rigid movement of the scarcely-jointed figures is a large part of the film, but that’s almost immediately betrayed by her figure’s inexplicable elbow bend and exceedingly expressive face—not to mention all the weirdly-realistic scenery. Like the toy line this is based on, Playmobil: The Movie already looks like it belongs at the bottom of the drawer, beneath the cooler stuff.

Anyway, Jim Gaffigan, Adam Lambert, Kenan Thompson, Meghan Trainor, and Daniel Radcliffe co-star, and at least one of them “flosses,” so that’s very timely and very cool. We’ll find out how else Playmobil will attempt to be a relevant brand when the company’s film hits theaters August 16.
