That the Sonic the Hedgehog movie took the form of a wretched Pacific Northwest buddy comedy that paired Sonic with James Marsden in their fight against Jim Carrey’s unrecognizably-lean Dr. Robotnik is so abjectly wrong that of course it was somehow a success. And if it ain’t broke—or at least not as broke as Sonic’s initial, ghastly design—don’t fix it.
So, as we see in this first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, it’s all that shit again. Sonic is running around Seattle; he’s fishing with his handsome human friend in Montana; and Robotnik is still just Jim Carrey (though now at least bald and with a wilder mustache). The big addition? Two new characters: two-tailed fox Miles “Tails” Prower and ostensible echidna Knuckles. Tails is being played by the voice actor who’d voiced him since 2014, but for Knuckles, Paramount shelled out the big bucks for Idris Elba. Let the kids know that Knuckles is very fuckable!
Also let them know that they can watch him battle Sonic in perhaps the most classic, colorful Sonic locale—Generic Suburban Backyard Zone—when Sonic the Hedgehog 2 hits theaters April 8.
