Soul looks like a return to the soul of Pixar

From what we’ve seen in the trailers, Pixar’s next effort, Onward, looks far more like a hammy DreamWorks Animation adventure than what we’ve come to expect from the studio’s usual, non-vehicle-based efforts.

Assuaging fears that Pixar may have lost its way, here’s the trailer for the animation icon’s latest, what appears to be a gorgeously-animated, sure-to-be emotional return to Pixar’s, yes, SOUL. Which is the film’s title also.

Co-written and co-directed by Up and Inside Out‘s Pete Docter, the film stars Jamie Foxx as Joe Gardner, a middle school music teacher still chasing his dream of playing in a legendary New York City jazz club. Just when it seems in reach, Joe falls into an open manhole and dies, sending his spirit to some sort of celestial staircase. There he meets Tina Fey’s 22, a young spirit who will help him find his way back in more ways than one. And damn if this thing’s look at the streets of New York don’t somehow capture New York better than live-action films actually shot there.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross provide Soul‘s soundtrack, with Jonathan Batiste lending his music on the keys. John Ratzenberger, Phylicia Rashad, Daveed Diggs, and Questlove co-star.

Soul hits theaters next June.
