Weekend Box Office: Will Smith crawls from lamp to big holiday weekend

Disney just scored another big success with their strategy of remaking cartoons as live-action, invariably worse films.

Over the Memorial Day weekend, Will Smith’s grotesque emergence from a lamp put enough regretful asses in the seats to give it the fifth largest opening ever for the four-day break. According to Box Office Mojo’s estimates, Aladdin has already pulled in $112.7 million through Monday. That was easily enough to take the top spot, pushing John Wick: Chapter 3 to second ($31 million), Avengers: Endgame to third ($22.3 million), and Detective Pikachu to fourth ($17.3 million). Brightburn and Booksmart debuted in the fifth and sixth spots, earning a respective $9.5 and $8.7 million.

But watch out, Blue Will Smith, because this weekend you’re up against some tough rivals on both your flamboyance and monstrosity fronts: Rocketman and Godzilla: King of the Monsters hit theaters this Friday.
