In a rant that barely even counts as strange or controversial at this point, Donald Trump yesterday used one of his unending rallies to get all huffy about Parasite winning Best Picture at the Oscars.
While Bong Joon-ho’s celebrated hit’s takes on wealth, class, and capitalism are clearly antithetical to the President’s worldview, Trump’s problem with the win is obviously far less though out than that.
He’s just pissed that it’s an international film.
“I’m mad with the Academy Awards this year—did you see it?” Trump asked a crowd that quickly answered with boos. “And the winner is… a movie from South Korea! What the hell was that all about?”
“Was it good? I don’t know,” he continued, tacitly acknowledging he didn’t see the film before then implying the Best Picture winner should have been… something that came out at least 70 years ago?
“You know, I’m lookin’ for, like, where—let’s get Gone with the Wind. Can we get, like, Gone with the Wind back, please? Sunset Boulevard… so many great movies.”
Truly, after losing the 1950 Best Picture to All About Eve, a shock to see Sunset Boulevard stiffed again. So many great movies.
Anyway, those willing and able to deal with a Korean film can now see Parasite remastered for IMAX screens, to really stretch out the socioeconomic disparity. Starting today, it will be back on the very big screen for a week.
