Colin Firth does some sham sailing in The Mercy trailer

So here’s a pretty odd one. The Mercy had its premiere over a year ago, then hit UK theaters last February to largely positive reviews. It stars a couple charismatic Academy Award winners (Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz) and was directed by another Academy Award winner—Man on Wire and The Theory of Everything‘s James Marsh. And now, after sitting on the shelf for ages, it’s hitting US theaters for only one day: a THURSDAY, December 6. Weird, right? We can bother acting like anyone wants to see this Nutcracker movie, but this awards-bait real-life story can’t even get a week on screens? It’s not like it looks amazing, but jeez.

Anyway, it’s about Donald Crowhurst, the British businessman and amateur sailor who attempted a single-handed, round-the-world yacht race. Without spoiling too much, it didn’t go great for him. There’s a day you can see that story in theaters, so take it or leave it.
