Dev Patel faces Medieval Groot in David Lowery’s Green Knight trailer

David Lowery is here with a lesson for Guy Ritchie in how to turn some dorky Arthurian fantasy into something actually stylish and cool.

Take his crash course for yourself with this first trailer for The Green Knight, the A Ghost Story director’s adaptation of the 14th-century poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.

In the tale, a hulking green knight—here looking very Groot-ish—arrives in Camelot with a proposition. He’s like, “Alright, fuck-os, so I’ve got this giant axe. Does anyone want to take a free swipe at me with it? Only thing is, in a year and a day, you have to let me take a free shot back at you.”

Gawain (Dev Patel), the youngest of Arthur’s Knights of the Round, replies, “That seems fair, so sure. Why not?”

He hacks the guy’s head clean off, but then the Green Knight just picks it up and rides off, his decapitated head saying, “Don’t forget: a year and a day. Also, I’d rather not make the trip again, so could you come to me next time?”

In fulfilling his side of the bargain, Gawain ends up having some adventures on his journey. And a lot of it has to do with him giving little smooches in exchange for wild game. So that part’s pretty weird.

The Green Knight also features Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton, Barry Keoghan, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, and Ralph Inneson. It hits theaters May 29.
