Since arriving as the latest Sam Worthington we all assumed we’d forget moments after seeing him, Joel Edgerton has proven a surprisingly reliable Hollywood asset. He was basically the saving grace of Bright, and his feature directorial debut, The Gift, was a enough solid thriller that made us question Jason Bateman for the first time before Ozark. Now Edgerton is back with his sophomore writing-directing effort, Boy Erased, a film that takes But I’m a Cheerleader to a far less cheerfully kitschy place. Rising indie actor Lucas Hedges stars as a gay teen whose Baptist parents (Edgerton’s fellow continental Australians, Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe) ship him off to a conversion camp to pray the gay out of him. Does it work??? For that answer, wake the eff up and/or see Boy Erased when it hits theaters this November.
