Satires of the idyllic uniformity of suburbia are nearly as old as ’50s planned communities themselves, but anyway, here’s another with a slightly new twist: now it’s also a thriller.
Vivarium sees Jesse Eisenberg and Imogen Poots, reunited since The Art of Self-Defense, as a couple looking to buy their first home. A Mormon-looking real estate agent shows them a little place in a sprawling labyrinth of identical green homes, but they aren’t into it. Unfortunately, once they try to leave, they find they’re trapped in an endless maze, its unseen maker insistent upon them playing out this little fantasy.
Wait, is this just an extended metaphor for the development hell that ill-conceived Monopoly movie has been in for over a decade…? Find out March 27.
