With a cast that includes Regina King, LaKeith Stanfield, Idris Elba, Jonathan Majors, Zazie Beetz, Delroy Lindo, Elba’s second Netflix cowboy movie this year is certainly more eye-catching than his first.
As seen in this first trailer, The Harder They Fall comes as a slick little post-Western—an old-fashioned revenge story having some fun with big camera moves and a soundtrack that isn’t exactly Morricone.
The film comes from Jeymes Samuel, also known as singer-songwriter/producer The Bullitts. He worked with Jay-Z on The Great Gatsby and has reunited with him here for some new music on what’s sure to be a dope soundtrack (it’s Fela Kuti in the trailer). It’s also worth noting that this isn’t Samuel’s first rodeo in doing a start-studded Western. He made his debut with the 50-minute They Die by Dawn, which saw Rosario Dawson, Giancarlo Esposito, Michael K. Williams, Kelly Hu, Jesse Williams, and Bokeem Woodbine die as a Tidal exclusive.
Hopefully Samuel will have better luck on Netflix. And hopefully he’ll get his brother, MF’in SEAL, to give us another “Kiss from a Rose” on this thing. We need “Kissed from Another Rose” now more than ever.
