As the Friends theme song famously declares, “I’ll be there for youuuuu… to show up whenever there’s a massive paycheck involved.”
So, over a quarter century since Rachel, Chandler, Monica, Joey, Phoebe, and David Schwimmer first conveniently found group seating in a Manhattan coffee place, the crew is reportedly getting back together and be paid exorbitant amounts for an hour-long show to stream on HBO Max.
While the Friends cast famously received a million dollars an episode for their final seasons with the show, it’s said they’ll now be paid in the neighborhood of $3-4 million for what is not a reboot or new episode but “an unscripted reunion special.” Which sounds a lot like “HBO will recreate the Central Perk set and everyone will just have an hour-long reminisce guided by an unnamed host.”
There’s not yet an official announcement, but earlier this week Matthew Perry tweeted, “Big news coming…” Was he referring to the Friends reunion? Or that a network finally picked up one of these hypothetical Matthew Perry sitcoms I invented and that Perry is utterly unaware of…?
Both options are equally likely, so we’ll see.
