A pulpy, bloody, surreal, ’80s-reverent horror featuring Nicolas Cage in a chainsaw duel, Mandy is pretty much guaranteed to find a cult following. It’s the latest from Panos Cosmatos, who last made his feature debut with the slick-looking sci-fi of Beyond the Black Rainbow. Like that film, Mandy seems to largely take a style-over-substance, mixed-pastiche approach to genre filmmaking. Consequently, this trailer doesn’t put a lot of emphasis on plot, but you’ll get the gist: some sort of backwoods, supernatural cult has abducted Mandy (Andrea Riseborough), Cage is out for revenge, and a very long chainsaw isn’t even the wildest weapon in this thing. Because Cage also forges a battle axe that looks straight out of the props department on Krull.
Mandy will be clearly be mandatory viewing when its hits theaters September 14.
