Greta Gerwig, Noah Baumbach to give us the most low-key Barbie movie

The long-gestating Barbie movie has taken yet another unexpected pivot in the stilted walk forward on its unbending knees.

In development since at least 2009, the film was once being written as a self-aware comedy by a Sex and the City staffer. Then Diablo Cody was brought on board to re-write it before the whole thing was scrapped at Universal and shifted to Sony. Since then, it’s shifted from an Amy Schumer comedy, to an Anne Hathaway dream car of a vehicle, and to Warner Bros., where most recently (and most on the nose) Margot Robbie took over the title role. And now there’s another shift that lines up nicely with Barbie’s increasing body realism: Mistress America and Frances Ha co-writers Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig signing on to give this thing its latest script. Though Baumbach directed those films, this is more likely to be Gerwig’s doll; it’s said she’s the favorite to direct.

Shame that still no one has the courage to complete the David Lynch version, though…
