Following a couple pretty rotten attempts at making a G.I. Joe ensemble films, now Paramount is taking another approach: the Marvel model of starting with the origin story of how this guy started wearing his expressionless mask that covers his entire head.
So here it is with the trailer for Snake Eyes, Crazy Rich Asians’ Henry Golding starring as the titular G.I. Joe ninja. The film has a solid supporting cast that includes Warrior’s Andrew Koji as Storm Shadow, Samara Weaving as Scarlett, and Úrsula Corberó as The Baroness—but honestly, you’d probably be better off watching just about any proper martial arts flick before this one based on a 3.75″ bundle of plastic. It’s written by the guy who did The Huntsman: Winter’s War and the Charlie’s Angels reboot, and directed by the guy who did Red, R.I.P.D., and a couple Divergent movies. It will probably not be great!
Nevertheless, it will hit actual theaters July 23.
