It was another miserable weekend at the movies

With the widest new release being a 900-theater rerelease of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the weekend box office was just as garbage as we figured. It didn’t quite dip below the prior weekend’s 15-year low, but it sure got close. BoxOfficeMojo is calling it the worst Labor Day weekend in 17 years. At the top of the charts, for a scarcely deserved third straight week, was The Hitman’s Bodyguard. Annabelle: Creation, Wind River, Leap!, and Logan Lucky rounded out the top five.

Next weekend, look for The Hitman’s Bodyguard‘s halfhearted reign to finally come to an end as actual movies It and Home Again arrive. And, hey, so does 9/11 with Charlie Sheen!
